Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Flower Mound Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Flower Mound runs $130 to $250 installed when we do it, and most jobs are done the same day you call. We stock Clopay-compatible cables and drums on the truck, so we’re not running back to a parts house while your door sits crooked in the opening. You usually know this part’s failed because the door suddenly hangs uneven, makes a grinding noise, or one side won’t lift at all while the other side strains.

The cable and drum are the lifting pair. The drum is the wheel at the top of the torsion bar that winds and unwinds the cable. The cable runs from that drum down to the bottom bracket of your door. When either one goes, the door loses tension on that side. That’s why it sits lopsided or jerks when the opener pulls it. Otto Reinhardt has been replacing Clopay cables and drums in this county long enough to tell you exactly what failed before the door’s even fully open.

  • Common failure pair: cable frays first, then snaps; the drum rarely fails on its own unless the cable was left too long after fraying.
  • Average installed cost here: $130-$250, quoted before we start and held when we arrive.
  • Same-day availability: we carry the parts, so a morning call usually means an afternoon fix.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has built doors under several series names over the years: the Classic, Gallery, Coachman, Reserve, Canvas, and the newer IntelliCore and Intellivent lines just to name the ones we see most in Flower Mound. The good news is the cable and drum setup doesn’t change much across those models. What changes is the drum profile, cable length, and sometimes the cable diameter.

The gotcha is this: Clopay doesn’t use one universal drum. A 7-foot door and an 8-foot door need different drums because the cable has to travel a different distance. We also see differences between standard-lift and high-lift tracks. If you’ve got ceiling-hugging tracks in a two-story garage, or the door rises straight up before it curves back, that’s high-lift, and the drum is a different animal. Match the wrong drum and the cable spools unevenly. The door binds. The opener burns itself out trying to compensate.

If you can read the sticker on the inside of your door panel, that’s the fastest way to identify the model. But half the time that sticker’s been painted over or peeled off. We can measure the drum, count the cable track groove spacing, and match it right. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay, which means we’re free to tell you when a quality aftermarket part does the job just as well as the Clopay-branded one, and when it doesn’t.

For most residential Clopay doors, a proper-grade aftermarket cable works fine. It’s galvanized aircraft-strand wire, the same spec Clopay uses from the factory. Drums, though, we’re pickier about. The nylon drum on some Clopay models wears a groove pattern specific to that model’s lift geometry. If we can’t match that groove profile exactly, we order the Clopay part. It’s not worth saving thirty bucks to watch the cable eat a groove into the drum in six months.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door’s sitting lopsided. One side of the door hangs lower than the other, or the gap under the closed door is wider on one end. This means one cable has stretched, slipped, or snapped, and the door is riding on uneven tension. Don’t keep running the opener like this; it’s putting lateral force on the track brackets.
  • You can see frayed strands on the cable. Walk up to the door and run your eye along the cable while it’s closed. If you see loose steel strands poking out from the cable body, that cable is done. In Flower Mound’s heat and occasional humidity swings, galvanized cables go through more expansion-contraction cycles than folks expect, which is why we see fraying before snapping in most cases. Replace it before it snaps, because when it snaps the door drops.
  • The opener’s working but the door jerks and shudders on the way up. That’s the drum struggling to spool a cable that’s no longer smooth. The cable’s likely got a kink or a flat spot where a roller bound up. Every jerk puts stress on the bottom bracket and the opener gear.
  • You hear a grinding or squeaking sound from the top corners of the door. The cable’s running against a drum with a worn or cracked groove. On nylon drums, a hairline crack will squeak every time that section rotates through. Eventually that crack widens and the cable jumps off the drum entirely.
  • One side of the door won’t lift at all, and you can see a loose cable hanging there. That’s past diagnosis stage. The cable’s snapped or slipped off the drum. The door is no longer held in tension on that side. Before you do anything else, unplug the opener and call us. Running that opener now will bend the track or tear the bottom bracket out of the panel.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Flower Mound, expect a Clopay cable and drum replacement to run $130 to $250 installed. That’s the number Otto quotes on the phone and holds when he pulls up. Not a range that “depends on what we find.” If it’s a simple cable swap on a common door: closer to $130. If the drum’s cracked and the cable’s been off for a week of daily use forcing the door: closer to $250 because we’re replacing both the drum and the cable, and likely resetting the torsion system to spec.

Every price includes the parts, the labor, rebalancing the door, and a cycle test so you’re not calling us again in three weeks. We quote the job before we start and we don’t revise it at the door. Period. If you’ve got a written estimate from another Flower Mound shop, bring it to us. We’ll give you a free second opinion, no trip charge inside the county.

Service Typical Price in Flower Mound
Single cable replacement $130-$180
Pair of cables $180-$220
Cable + drum (one side) $190-$250
Full replacement, both sides $220-$250
Labor, reset of torsion balance Included in above

The work’s covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If something’s not right, Otto comes back and makes it right. That’s in writing on the invoice, and it’s backed by one phone call to him directly, not a queue.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check which side is down, whether the cable’s frayed, and whether the drum has visible cracks. You can measure your door height and check the model sticker if it’s still there. That’s useful information to have when you call.

What you should not do is touch the cable connection at the bottom bracket. That bracket is under full spring tension. If you unbolt it wrong, that cable whips out with enough force to break a hand. And nothing good happens when a human hand meets a loaded torsion system. This isn’t a “be careful” situation. It’s a “the spring holds enough stored energy to lift a 150-pound door, so respect it” situation. We train on this. We’re set up for it. Call us at (817) 631-5388 and let us thaw that particular frozen conundrum. You won’t pay extra because you diagnosed it first.
